Antique Watch Chain Bracelet
Antique Watch Chain Bracelet
This piece has a lot going on! The 14 KGF antique watch chain is made with open sides. (new to me)
There’s is a pink/gold handmade bead that has some major history. Right after World War II Europe was on its knees. No jobs just hauling junk to newly made dumps.
Probably more information than anyone wants….
Housewives who months earlier were making munitions and swinging hammers and were then relegated to the kitchen again. To make a little side money they made beads at the kitchen table after their chores were done. Those components were made into whimsically necklaces that hit the market hard in the 1early 1950s.
How they were made.
A propane torch was attached to the table with rods of different colored glass from Italy. They would introduce, slowly, the tip of the glass rod to the flame. Once it was melting, they took a rod of bronze (preferably) and wrapped the glass around the rod.
The next step was putting the rod back into the flame and rotating until the glass was melted to the edge. I know all this because I did it myself when I started making jewelry,
The gold/pink bead was made this way, but what is amazing was they managed to get foil on the core without it wrinkling. An ‘opal’ glass was laid over the foil and viola.
Mixed with Pearls and Labradorite you’ve got a winner. It has a magnetic clasp and guard chain for saftey.
